La Galette des Rois
Last week we celebrated the French tradition of the start of the year, La Galette des Rois. The ‘King’s Pie’, traditionally celebrated at the start of January, is a puff pasty cake made from sweet almonds with a very special surprise hidden inside, a charm “fève” traditionally made out of porcelain. Students lucky enough to pick out a piece of pie and discover the charm are to be crowned King or Queen for the day! With 135 pies ordered on the occasion, we celebrated the event last Friday on both our Campuses, also welcoming parents to try a piece during pick-up time over at our Junior Campus! With over 40 different nationalities at BCIS, honoring traditions are very important to us; they allow us to transmit shared values, stories, and rituals from one generation to the next, from culture to culture. Traditions encourage our community to create and share a collective identity, which in turn serves to shape open individual identities!
